Fireworks shot at asylum center

Police in Vest-Agder reported that a local asylum center was the target of someone setting off fireworks in its direction over the weekend. Police were summoned to the Birkeli Asylum Center around midnight on Sunday.

“We had a report of reckless use of fireworks shot off from a small silver-coloured car,” Martin Ugland, operations leader of the Agder Police District, told news bureau NTB. The car reportedly drove up the asylum center and targeted it, in what appears to be the latest incident of an attack on an asylum center in Norway.

Police sent a patrol car to the center but had few leads, according to Ugland. “We have nothing concrete to go after,” he said, adding that no one could offer more information about the car.

He said there was no damage to the center nor were there any injuries, but residents were likely frightened. There have been few attacks on asylum centers in Norway compared to the fires set at centers and potential centers in Sweden, but local authorities are alarmed and making efforts to enhance security for newly arrived asylum seekers.
