There also was an increase in the numbers of Norwegians who planned to spend more holiday time at home. Virke’s survey showed that 38 percent of those questioned would take at least some time off at home, up from 33 percent last year.

The survey, called Reisepuls, also showed that Norwegians are spending more money on their summer holidays this year than they did last year. They planned to spend NOK 40,200 (USD 5,000) on average, up from NOK 39,400.

Norwegians living in Oslo planned to spend the most on their summer holidays, according to another study conducted by Nordea Bank. All told, reported Nordea, Norwegians are expected to spend NOK 50 billion on holidays this year.

“After Norwegians cut their travel budgets by 10 percent last year (following the oil price collapse that hurt the national economy), we’re increasing this year’s consumption by nearly a thousand kroner,” Nordea’s consumer economist Elin Reitan told news bureau NTB.

Spending time with family and friends during summer holidays was listed as most important by fully 72 percent of those respnding. Sunshine and swimming, good food and drink and cultural experiences were also listed as goals in Norwegians’ summer holiday plans.
