Noted diplomat Mona Juul was announced as the new Norwegian ambassador to the United Kingdom on Friday. Juul has previously served as Norway’s ambassador to the United Nations, and was instrumental in brokering the 1993 Oslo accord between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
Juul is currently Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Utenriksdepartementet), reported news bureau NTB. She’s best known for the key role she and her husband Terje Rød-Larsen played during the secret negotiations leading to the Oslo accord, where she was part of the team that acted as facilitators and mediators. Juul was the ambassador to Israel from 2001 to 2004.
The 54-year-old also served as state secretary of the foreign ministry under former prime minister Jens Stoltenberg’s first government. It has not yet been announced when she’ll take up the role.
