13-year-old believed murdered

Police in Rogaland have launched a murder investigation after a 13-year-old girl was found dead at Varhaug in Jæren, south of Stavanger. Special investigators from state crime unit Kripos have been called in.

The body of the girl was found on a path near Møllevegen, which lies between a hiking area and a populated area on the outskirts of Varhaug. “Our main theory is that we’re facing a murder, but at the same time we are keeping other options open,” prosecutor Herdis Traa said at a press conference Monday.

The girl’s father had contacted police just after midnight Sunday, saying his daughter had failed to come home after visiting a girlfriend. Family, friends and police started looking for the girl, whose body was found within walking distance of her home. Police said the body was found by someone who knew her.

Police cordoned off a large area around the location where the girl was found. Police said they had no cause of death, no suspects and that her body had been sent for autopsy.
