Five more Norwegian teens arrested in Greece

Young Norwegian men have been causing trouble on Greek islands this summer. State broadcaster NRK reported Sunday that five more were arrested on the island of Ios, and charged with beating and breaking the legs of another Norwegian 18-year-old.

NRK reported that Norwegian youth say that fights have broken out nearly every day during the past week, and young Norwegians are involved. Versions vary about how the fights started, but they’re all said to involve rival groups of teens entering their last year of Norwegian high school (videregåendeskole), when they’re known as russ.

NRK published a video Sunday afternoon showing five Norwegians chasing another young Norwegian, who allegedly fell over a ledge and broke a leg. Then he was kicked and beaten by his pursuers, who allegedly broke his other leg. He was sent to a hospital in Athens for treatment.

The recent incidents follow earlier brawls outside local bars, during which 10 Norwegian teens were among youth arrested and jailed. All have since been released. NRK reported that the five 18-year-olds jailed during the weekend have also been released, but face court appearances.
