Police in Lørenskog, northeast of Oslo, have decided to charge a woman in her 30s with murdering her two children and then attempting to kill herself as well. She survived the alleged murder-suicide attempt in what police were calling “a family tragedy.”
Emergency services were first called to the family’s home early Sunday morning after a fire alarm had gone off. There they found the two children, both under the age of 10, dead and their mother seriously injured. Details of the injuries were withheld, however, and police later charged and questioned their father.
He was quickly released, however, and all charges dropped against him. Local police chief Ida Melbo Øystese called the situation “tragic” and stated that “our thoughts go to a family in crisis.”
The mother remained at Oslo University Hospital Ullevål on Tuesday, with police opting against questioning her or filing charges because of her condition. Court-appointed attorneys in the case refused most comment, also calling the case “a tragedy for very many people, and very difficult.”
