Police call for more help at Mongstad

Norway’s western police district has asked the military for help, if the need for extra security around Equinor’s huge oil and gas plant and refinery at Mongstad becomes long term. Unidentified drones were seen flying over the supply base at Mongstad both Thursday evening and in the pre-dawn hours of Friday.

Local police don’t have enough resources to become full-time guards at the plant. Security was raised after the suspected sabotage, tied to Russia’s war on Ukraine, of gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The military is already on patrol around offshore installations.

Newspapers Bergensavisen and Avisa Nordhordland both reported on Saturday that the chief of the Vest Police District, Gustav Landro, confirmed “conversations and planning” for getting help from Norwegian defense forces. He stressed that police haven’t received any concerete threats against the oil and gas installations but there remains a need for more visible police presence in the area.
