Norway’s Greens Party is lashing out at government ministers from the farmer-friendly Center Party who refuse to follow experts’ nutrition recommendations. The recommendations call for a major cuts in consumption of red meat, but Center leaders have no intention of promoting any.
“That’s completely irresponsible,” claimed Greens MP Une Aina Bastholm. “This is research-based nutrition advice that the government can’t just overlook.”
Center leader Trygve Slagsvold Vedum, who also serves as Norway’s finance minister, is doing exactly that, though, as is Center’s Agriculture Minister Sandra Borch. They don’t want to be connected to anything that could hurt Norwegian farmers who raise cattle, lamb and pork and produce meat.
Bastholm is urging them to at least promote more vegetarian food, which is strongly recommended in the nutrition recommendations from researchers for the report released through the Nordic Council. Bastholm opposes current Norwegian policy that promotes high meat consumption and, according to her, makes it “more difficult and expensive to choose healthy and environmentally friendly food.”
