Norway’s foreign ministry has condemned attacks on the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad last week. The attacks were carried out by Iraqi demonstrators protesting the burning of their holy book, the Koran, in Stockholm.
“Attacks against diplomatic personnel and foreign missions are a serious violation of the Vienna Convention,” stated Mariken Bruusgaard Harbitz of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry in an email to news bureau NTB. Harbitz stressed that Iraqi authorities are responsible for protecting diplomatic personnel and foreign embassies and consulates.
The Iraqi demonstrators rallied outside the embassy, as they have earlier, but also began attacking the building and setting it on fire. Norway, meanwhile, has no Nowegian employees at its own chancellery in the Iraqi capital at present.
