Hundreds of Norwegians are among the thousands of tourists being evacuated from raging forest fires on Rhodes in the Greek islands. After lots of complaints against tour operators, Tui is now among those offering to fly their customers home, or at least to Denmark.
All Nordic Tui customers evacuated from their hotels on Rhodes were being offered seats on an extra flight to Billund in Denmark on Monday evening. Tui was also arranging transport on to Copenhagen, reported TV2.
Many have been trying to sleep in makeshift shelters set up by local community officials. The inferno has clearly frightened and saddened many, who also praised local residents for offering as much drink, food and other help as they could while also suffering from the intense heat and fires themselves.
A total of around 19,000 tourists had to be evacuated from their hotels during the weekend. Residents now fear for the future of their important tourism industry, as the entire Mediterranean area suffers through the hottest summer on record with temperatures over 40C (105F).
