Norwegian police faced their 17th murder investigation so far this year, after a woman was found dead in an apartment in Oslo early Monday morning. A man who was also in the apartment has been charged with murder.
“As of now we’re not looking for any other suspects,” wrote Oscar Støversten of the Oslo Police in a press release. He noted that the man charged has acknowledged ties to her death and an alleged murder weapon had been recovered. The relationship between the man and woman was unclear.
State broadcaster NRK reported that a public defender was quickly assigned to the case but hadn’t yet spoken with his new client. Police were questioning neighbours in the apartment building in Oslo’s Grünerløkka district but told NRK that no one had seen or heard anything unusual during the night near the end of the country’s five-day Easter holiday period.
Norway has traditionally had a very low murder rate compared to other countries, but has seen a spike since New Year, also in cases of murder-suicides. The vast majority involve assailants who are partners or otherwise related to their victims.
