Autumn arrives in all its glory

PHOTO FEATURE: After an unusually warm September, temperatures have fallen and autumn is bursting out all over Norway. There’s already some snow in the mountains and in Northern Norway, while the glory of autumn is ablaze in the south.

There are still plenty of boats in the water, but now the weather is getting chillier and boating season is winding down, like here near Sandvika west of Oslo. The hills of Kolsås in the background are sporting lots of fall colours, and attracting hikers and climbers.

Trails along the fjord are also popular, like this one near the Henie-Onstad art center, with the hills of Vestmarka and Skaugum in the background. Mornings and evenings are now chilly, and the days are getting markedly shorter.

Not everyone is willing to give up on boating season, including this skipper near the island of Kalvøya.

Meanwhile, back in Oslo, the Norwegian capital’s oldest building, Gamle Aker Kirke from the Middle Ages, could barely be seen during the weekend behind this bounty of autumn leaves in the city’s St Hanshaugen neighbourhood.

It’s also colourful now in the backyards of apartments and office buildings in downtown Oslo. This large maple tree can be found just behind the Aker Brygge complex.

Lots of leaves have already fallen at higher elevations, like here in the hills of Nordmarka north of the capital …

… and here in Romeriksåsen, but the marshes are still colourful. The weather turned foggy and rainy heading into the weekend, but that provides contrast and can make the fall colours seem even brighter until trees are bare. State meteorologists were predicting more snow and strong winds in the North, as autumn suddenly heads into winter.
