Two men jailed after fatal stabbing

A repeat offender and an accomplice were ordered held in jail on Monday, charged with murder or accessory to murder after a fatal stabbing in downtown Oslo Saturday evening. The victim was an Afghan citizen in his 20s.

Both suspected assailants are also in their 20s and foreign citizens, from Iran and Syria. One of them has a prior conviction for violence and was recently acquitted on charges of making threats. He has gone along with a judge’s order that he be kept in confinement for at least four weeks, while police continue their investigation into the stabbing. The other man under arrest is challenging his confinement, claiming he has not committed any crime.

Both were arrested following the weekend stabbing on Storgata, a busy street in downtown Oslo, just before 7pm. The man stabbed was rushed to hospital but died later in the evening. Police said they’d so far been unable to contact his next of kin.

The motive for the stabbing remained unclear. Police told state broadcaster NRK that it was still early in their investigation and they didn’t want to comment on details that could influence it.
