Public transport disruptions in Oslo

Two of Oslo’s major transport hubs closed during the weekend, as did a key metro line that’s especially popular with tourists. That’s set off lots of public transport disruption while Oslo’s metro system undergoes needed improvements and expansion.

The metro line- and station closures at Majorstuen and National Theater had been warned for months, all part of a major upgrade that includes a major renovation of the busy Majorstuen station. The station also needs to be connected to the new metro line being built out to Fornebu, west of the city, and that includes construction of a new tunnel and improvements to the existing one that connects Majorstuen to the National Theater station downtown.

There won’t be any metro lines running through downtown for at least the next five weeks, with all metro service from the east ending at the Stortinget station. Lines from the west are ending at Borgen, just west of Majorstuen, with alternative bus service from there. The popular Line 1 up to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and Frognerseteren, with lots of residential neighbourhoods along the way, is closed completely but also with alternative bus service on offer.

The train lines that also run through the National Theater station downtown are not affected by the metro closures. Transport authorities timed the metro- and station renovations to coincide with the summer holiday season when commuter traffic falls, but some tourists are bound to be disappointed or confused.
