‘Hytte’ thieves stole owner’s toilet

The owner of one of Norway’s many holiday cabins, known as a hytte, got a rough start to the summer after her mother made a routine inspection tour. She discovered that thieves had made off with the hytte’s portable toilet.

The hytte, like many around the country, isn’t hooked up to a public sewage system and is equipped with an electrically powered toilet that deals with waste. Apparently such toilets have suddenly become a target of specialized thieves, since local police on the northern island of Senja reported at least three other similar thefts on the island in recent months, and more nationally.

The theft was initially reported by local newspaper Folkebladet, and picked up by national media. The toilets cost around NOK 30,000 (USD 3,000) and it will take time and money to get it replaced, in addition to making it challenging to use the hytte in the meantime.

The thieves apparently broke into a locked key box mounted outside the hytte, allowing them to enter through the front door, unplug and dismount the toilet and leave, pausing to re-lock the door on their way out. “There was hardly anything else of value to steal,” the hytte owner told state broadcaster NRK. “They took the toilet and a coffee-maker machine.”
