Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre had what he called “a good conversation” on Thursday with the newly elected leader of Hungary, Peter Magyar. Støre said he sent a message of support for Magyar’s agenda along with his earlier congratulations.
“It’s a promising start to both closer bilateral cooperation and more constructive cooperation within both Europe and NATO,” Støre said. He strongly supports Magyar’s plans to restore Hungary’s democracy and governance under law.
Støre said Magyar “wants closer relations with the EU and NATO, and that’s good news for both Norway and Europe.” The two leaders also discussed the war in Ukraine and how Russia poses the biggest threat to peace and stability in Europe.
Støre said in the press statement Thursday afternoon that he’d mentioned how the earlier Orban government has blocked a EUR 90 billion loan to Ukraine from the EU and stressed its importance. They also discussed funding for Magyar’s reform program in Hungary from Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, which all have close relations with the EU through the European Economic Agreement (EEA).
