Beer sales nearly double during the World Cup

Football fans and beer make for what one major Norwegian beer producer calls “an unbeatable combination.” Sales at the Aass Brewery in Drammen were up 88 percent last week, between two of Norway’s World Cup victories, and its commercial director tied the increase to all the football fans out enjoying the matches in local bars and warm summer weather.

“It’s clearly World Cup fever, yes,” Anders Øvereng at the Aass plant told newspaper Dagens Næringsliv (DN) on Saturday. The next night, Norway beat Brazil and advanced again in the World Cup, with beer-drinking fans among those in ecstasy.

Aass is Norway’s oldest brewery and has years of statistics to which it can refer. Low-alcohol beer and other drinks have also been popular and Aass was sold out for light beer last Friday. Rival beer producers Mack in Tromsø, Hansa Borg in Bergen and Ringnes in Oslo have also been busy, with Ringnes delivering beer to the national Ullevaal Stadium where around 40,000 fans have gathered to watch World Cup matches on large screens. Ringnes, however, wouldn’t reveal any sales figures.
