Norwegian health officials have now confirmed two new cases of monkey pox, with one of the patients involved known to have been infected in Norway. The new cases bring the total registered to four.
“Both of those infected live in Oslo, but the two cases are not connected,” wrote the public health institute FHI in a press release this week. FHI (Folkehelseinstituttet) added that one person was infected in the capital while the other was infected in connection with a trip abroad.
Neither is seriously ill and both took contact themselves with FHI when they developed symptoms that include fever, swollen glands and the characteristic rash that resembles warts. The two infected are in isolation to avoid spreading the virus further.
Both new cases are tied to an outbreak in Europe as the virus, once generally confined to countries in Africa, also has been confirmed in various places around the world. FHI stressed that it was “not unexpected” that the virus would turn up in Norway as well, “and our health services are prepared for this.”
