Norwegian man murdered in Mexico

Norwegian police reported this week that they’d been alerted by officials in Mexico that a 55-year-old man from Kristiansand had been shot and killed in Mexico City late last Friday night. He’s been identified as Terje Grindheim, and the motive for his murder was unclear.

The Agder Police District, which covers Kristiansand, stated that no requests for assistance had come from their counterparts in Mexico, and no investigation was underway in Norway. The Norwegian police were informed that Grindheim was riding in a taxi in Mexico City when two gunmen on a motorcycle approached and, according to the taxi driver, fired shots through the taxi’s back window. After the taxi came to a halt, they then grabbed two suitcases in the taxi and rode off.

There was no word of any arrests as of Wednesday morning. Newspaper VG reported that Grindheim was leaving the international airport in Mexico City when the gunmen attacked the taxi. Police in Mexico stated in a press release that uniformed officers found Grindheim on the asphalt outside the taxi, with visible bloodstains on his clothing and summoned emergency medical assistance. Ambulance personnel reported gunshot wounds in Grindheim’s back and no sign of life.

A friend of Grindheim’s, Thomas Thygesen, told Kristiansand newspaper Fædrelandsvennen that it was “traumatic” to hear that Grindheim had been shot and killed. He was described as a “thoughtful and good friend” who was always ready to help others. The newspaper reported that Thygesen worked for real estate brokerages photographing properties up for sale. He also reportedly had periodically lived in Mexico and had bought into a large training  center in Playa del Carmen on the Yucatan peninsula.
