There was another serious boating accident on the Oslo Fjord Sunday afternoon, the latest of several others around Norway this summer. Four tourists have been killed, and maritime authorities are sharpening boat rental regulations.
Two tourists were killed off Måløy on the west coast, one in an accident near Flekkefjord farther south and another off Loppa in Northern Norway. “The risk is higher when those who rent boats aren’t familiar with the boat,” Petter Søreng of the state maritime directorate told state broadcaster NRK on Sunday. Nor are many familiar with the area or the local weather conditions when they rent boats, either for fishing or recreation.
In late July, meanwhile, a motor boat collided with a sailboat in the southern portion of the Oslo Fjord. Police reported afterwards that the skipper of the motorboat was in the boat’s toilet when the collision occurred. On Sunday there was another accident in the Oslo Fjord just off the Nesodden peninsula, when a motor boat with one person on boad collided with a sailboat with two people on board.
The motorboat, a day cruiser, capsized and NRK reported major damage to both boats, while one of those involved suffered minor injuries. All three were taken in for medical checks and police were investigating the cause of the collision.
