The family of Norwegian adventurer Steffen Skjøttelvik was in sorrow this week after his body was finally found in a river in Canada, nearly two weeks after he’d first been reported missing. The 29-year-old from Holmsbu in Asker, west of Oslo, had set off in 2023 on a 10,000-kilometer hike across Canada and Alaska with two dogs.
The dogs have been found and were being taken care of, but searchers initially found just Skjøttelvik’s backpack and then his jacket. Officials said they think he tried to cross the Hayes River in Manitoba but was swept away.
Christian Dyresen, a spokesman for the family, said they were relieved that his body had been found after an extensive, mostly volunteer search and rescue operation funded largely by donations. “Now the process can begin to bring Steffen home to Holmsbu,” he said.
