Crown Princess heading out on sick leave

It’s been another rough year for Norway’s royal family and not least for Crown Princess Mette-Marit. While her son faces trial on an expanded list of criminal charges, she faces a month in and out of the hospital for what’s being called a “lung rehabilitation.”

Mette-Marit, age 52, and Crown Prince Haakon have been touring three communities in the mountains this week, but next week she’ll start a month of treatments and hospitalization. She told reporters on Wednesday that she’ll be living partly at the hospital and partly at home.

“I need more support than I’ve had so far,” she said. She didn’t want to elaborate on what kind of treatments she’ll undergo, nor which hospital she’ll check into, noting that “I hope people can understand that I want some peace and quiet during this.”

Crown Prince Haakon said it’s “necessary” for his wife to have medical follow-ups for the lung disease she was diagnosed with several years ago, “and for this rehabilitation.”

Neither he nor his wife wanted to talk about all the criminal charges her son Marius Borg Høiby faces, which now include four rapes, vandalism and several incidents of violence towards women. His trial after what’s now expanded to a 32-count indictment is due to begin in February.

Even though he was living on the crown couple’s estate when some of the alleged crimes took place, neither his mother nor the crown prince are due to be called in to testify.
