Insurance claims pour in after Storm Amy

Thousands of insurance claims were already pouring in on Sunday, after the extreme weather system known as “Amy” caused lots of damage in central- and southern Norway over the weekend. Tryg Insurance Co had already received 1,016 claims for compensation by 4pm on Sunday, and more were expected.

The storm had winds that reached hurricane force of 62.1 meters per second and included heavy rain and snow in the mountains. Most of the claims received so far involve damage to private homes, possessions, cars and boats. In the town of Holmestrand alone, 18 cars parked in a lot ended up being covered with water after flash-flooding, while roofs and siding were swept off homes and other buildings.

Gjensidige, one of Norway’s largest insurance firms, reported 1,700 claims and If had received 1,400, while more claims for damage to businesses and commercial properties were expected all week long. Total costs are expected to be even higher than the NOK 2.7 billion claimed after Norway’s last major storm, Hans, three years ago. All insurance firms expect many more claims over the next week.
