Flooding continues in southwest

Residents of Sokndal and other areas of Rogaland in Norway’s southwestern region faced more flooding after more rain on Thursday. It’s been the wettest December most have ever experienced.

Unusually warm temperatures have brought rain instead of snow, with the resulting floods causing massive property damage and closing roads. Sokndal was also hit by a major power failure early in the day.

Local mayor Bjørn-Inge Mydland was maintaining a “crisis team” to help keep residents informed and prioritize calls for help coming in. The Sokna River rose to well over its banks, because of the heavy and unseasonal rain. Insurance companies were bracing for their own flood of claims from homeowners and businesses.
