Norwegian killed in southern Iran

An employee of Det Norske Veritas (DNV), the large Norwegian classification firm, has become the first known Norwegian casualty of the US’ and Israel’s war on Iran. Hamid Amini, age 46, was killed in an airborne attack while visiting relatives in Iran along with his own family from Norway.

“It’s incredibly sad news that we have lost Hamid,” DNV’s communications chief Ulrikke Haugen told newspaper Aftenposten after receiving confirmation of Amini’s death last weekend. “He has worked for us for 15 years and was on parental leave for a private trip to Iran.”

Amini’s family survived the American-Israeli attack. “Our deepest condolences and our thoughts go now to his family,” said Haugen, who remained unsure how they would get out of Iran and safely home to Norway. “We are in contact with the foreign ministry and are trying to offer services to them through the ministry, but we don’t have any details around that yet.”

Norway’s foreign ministry, meanwhile, was the target of criticism from some of the roughly 200 Norwegians still stranded in Dubai after a week of war. Norwegian authorities have sent a crisis team to the area but so far have not arranged any air evacuation like other countries have, including Ireland, Italy, France and the USA.

“We are somewhat disappointed over the ministry and the embassy here,” Marita Rekstad, who works as a teacher at a children’s school in Dubai, told Aftenposten. “No one has said anything about what we should do if this gets worse.” Some flights have begun to operate, but it was difficult to get seats, and very expensive.
