After nearly a month of disruption on various train lines in Southern Norway, striking locomotive engineers were ordered into compulsory mediation this week. On Friday they’ll likely have to settle their differences with state-owned train operator Vy.
The strike began on September 18 over the engineers’ dissatisfaction with work schedules and pay levels. They especially want to earn the same pay as locomotive engineers on the high-speed Airport Express Train (Flytoget) that’s been taken over by Vy.
There’s been no progress since the strike expanded and the leader of engineer’s labour federation said another expansion was “constantly under evaluation.” Now a forced settlement looms, and trains may resume more normal operations by next week.
