A Norwegian woman in 70s stumbled while walking down the gangway of the Hurtigruten ship Trollfjord, after the vessel berthed at Tromsø earlier this week. She ended up falling along the entire length of the gangway, and later died in hospital.
It was the first time Norway’s famed coastal shipping line has experienced such an accident, according to a spokesman for Hurtigruten, Ragnar Norum. He told local newspaper iTromsø that high tide meant the ship was also floating high above the pier.
That made for a relatively steep descent down the gangway, and the woman in her 70s, a passenger from Trondheim, tumbled headlong down it, landing on the pier.
She was unconscious when taken to the University Hospital for Northern Norway in Tromsø and later was transferred to the hospital in Trondheim, ,where she died on Thursday.
The woman and her husband had been on a roundtrip Hurtigruten cruise from Trondheim and planned to visit family in Tromsø. Her family told the newspaper they were grateful for the help they received at the hospital.
