Refugees refuse TB tests

Various groups of asylum seekers at the Refstad asylum center in Oslo have refused to let themselves be tested for tuberculosis (TB). Immigration authorities are asking for help to tackle the problem from the Justice Ministry.

All refugees arriving in Norway are subject to tests for TB and HIV/AIDS, as are many other immigrants as well. The refusal of some refugees to take the tests delays efforts to process them through the asylum system in Norway, reports news bureau NTB.

The state health ministry has also been called in to help solve the problem, which especially involves refugees from Nigeria. Refusal to show up for the tests means the authorities must wait for them to take the next round of tests offered in eight weeks. Meanwhile, the refugees remain in the transit centres, before they can be sent to longer term facitilities as they wait for their asylum applications to be processed.
