Truck explosion forced evacuations

A truck that was supposed to deliver explosives to road construction crews at Drevja in Nordland County instead exploded itself, after a fire started in the truck’s motor. Efforts by the driver and the road construction workers to put out the fire failed, and the truck exploded two hours later.

By that time, police had evacuated a wide area on Tuesday and there were no injuries. The impact from the exploding truck could be felt miles away, and was even picked up by the earthquake observation agency NORSAR at Kjeller, outside Oslo, reported newspaper Aftenposten.

Residents in the area, north of Mosjøen, were kept out of the so-called “security zone” around the truck for many hours and were offered hotel rooms for the night, reported newspaper Adressa. It was feared that burning remains from the truck that were flung through the air would land on nearby buildings and set them on fire, too. One was ignited Tuesday evening.

The road project, improvements to the highway connecting Sandnessjøen with Mo i Rana, needed the explosives to blast through rock. It was unclear when work could resume.
