Warm weather breeds lots of wasps

The heatwaves that have hit Norway this summer didn’t only plague the elderly and rob many of sleep in very warm homes. They’ve also resulted in an explosion within the wasp population that’s likely to continue for awhile.

“Wasps have really taken off this summer, there are absolutely crazy amounts of them,” Glen Hovdal, leader of an insect termination firm, told newspaper Romerikes Blad. His company has already had double the number of jobs as they did at the same time last year.

“Our technicians are out removing wasp nests every single day,” Hovdal said. Many home- and business owners who fear allergic reactions among family members, employees or customers are seeking help in removing the nests and wasps that have multiplied dramatically in the heat.

The warm summer from north to south in Norway has set many temperature records, but they’re not widely welcome. “None of these records is cause for celebration,” editorialized newspaper Aftenposten after thermometers in Trøndelag rose to more than 34C. “They’re being set much more often and are part of an international situation that’s well-known and documented – destructive warming of the earth’s climate.”
