The Norwegian government isn’t directly part of the European Union’s huge new loan to Ukraine, since it’s not an EU member, but Norway will still provide billions of aid to the war-torn country itself next year. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said this week he was glad there’s still widespread support for Ukraine in the Norwegian Parliament.
“It’s a great strength that all the parties in Parliament are standing behind (Norway’s) Nansen package of aid, NOK 85 billion also in 2026,” Støre said at his pre-Christmas press conference. “And it will be formed to take care of the Ukrainians’ needs to the best possible degree.”
Støre added that Norway will finance a new package worth NOK 3.2 billion to pay for weapons and ammunition for F16 fighter jets. He stressed the importance of military aid to Ukraine, to help maintain its defense from “the barbarian wave of attacks that the Russians have been launching, nearly every day and night.” He referred to “destiny” days and weeks ahead, for both Ukraine and Europe, and that the investment was also important for the security of Norway itself.
“Ukraine is really doing a job on behalf of all of us,” Støre said. “They are defending the modern Europe, the UN treaty and the rule of law. We must go into the Christmas holidays remembering that.”
