Heavy snow sparked accidents

Cars, trucks and busses slid out of control and slammed into one another on Wednesday, after heavy snow followed by rain in Southern Norway made roads unusually slick. There were several major accidents, from Kristiansand to Oslo and beyond.

The major E18 highway through the Norwegian capital was snarled by accidents both in and out of Oslo. It was closed in both directions Wednesday morning after the driver of a truck lost control, crashed over the center barrier and wound up blocking both eastbound- and westbound traffic. The truck also collided with an electric car that burst into flames and sent its driver to the hospital.

Later in the day a bus collided with a car on the E18 running south and east from Oslo, and that set the bus on fire. The major transport artery also had to be closed in both directions. There were many other incidents involving public transportation and most all school buses were cancelled.

There were also several accidents on slippery roads in Agder and Telemark, and delays at local airports when snow-plowing crews couldn’t keep up with the heavy snowfall. Roughly half of all flights in and out of Oslo’s main airport at Gardermoen were delayed.
