Never before has the Norwegian Meteorologic Institute recorded such an increase in average temperatures for the month of March. The average ended up at 3.9 degrees over what’s considered normal.
The former record for March was set in 2012, when average temperatures were logged at 3.3 degrees over normal.
“As a rule, temperature records are beaten by small margins,” Hans Olav Hygen, a climate researcher at the institute, told state broadcaster NRK. “It’s surprisingly high for a monthly record of temeperatures in the entire country to be beaten by 0.6 degrees.”
The unusually warm weather last month came after a few bitterly cold weeks in February. There was also relatively little snow in southern Norway this winter and poor skiing conditions even at elevations over 500 meters.
