New heat wave on the way

State meteorologists were warning on Monday that another Norwegian-style heat wave was on the way, with temperatures due to hit 30C or more in southern inland areas during the weekend. It’s expected to be warmest in Telemark and Buskerud, where thermometers are likely to rise to 27-28C (around 80F).

The warm, dry summer weather isn’t nearly as dramatic as what’s been scorching the UK and most of the European continent lately. It’s noteworthy, though, in a country where homes lack air conditioning and everything over 20C (70F) is considered warm. The heat wave is due to arrive just before the weekend and extend into next week.

Meteorologists also warned of what the Norwegians call tropenetter (literally “tropical nights”), when the temperature doesn’t fall below 20C after sunset. There are still relatively few hours of the night when the sun is down is down in Norway at this time of the year, meaning homes and bedrooms can become much warmer than usual and won’t cool off during the short nighttime hours.
