Immigrants’ language lessons doubled

The required hours of Norwegian language and social studies lessons for immigrants will be doubled from 300 to 600 hours in 2012, the Norwegian government has confirmed.

As well as an increase in the length of supervision, immigrants will also have to take an obligatory test on completion of their course.

The new rules were confirmed by government minister Audun Lysbakken, a representative of the Socialist Left Party. The new regulations were proposed by another governing party, the Labour Party, as part of a series of 99 solutions to the country’s integration problems.
