Justice Minister Knut Storberget said he was glad that more convicted criminals are being sent out of Norway, in line with tougher government policy.
Figures obtained by newspaper Aftenposten show that a total of 890 foreigners with criminal convictions have been deported so far this year.
They’re among the 4,042 unsuccessful asylum seekers who’ve been forcibly or voluntarily returned to their home countries. That compares to 2,541 last year.
The government is also trying to send more foreign convicts home to serve their time, but progress there has been slow because of paperwork and bureaucratic obstacles.
